How to Use Chopsticks


The westerners take the food with the help of spoons, fork – main dishes whereas Chinese use the chopstick to take food. When come to eating this is the major difference within this two culture. It is unavoidable that large chunk of meat, fish and chicken are not possible in Chinese dining table because large amount food can’t be take using these chop sticks. So most of dishes are small in size that can be easily picked up by the chopsticks and are easy to consume.

Chinese people using these chopsticks for long period that where spoon and fork enters to the western culture. These chop sticks where strongly recommended by great Chinese philosopher Confucius (551-479 BC). The Chinese food require great delicate when eat with chopsticks, because at the time dinner they have eat small pieces of food and also eat that food slowly, therefore it gives the appetizing taste to the food.

  • Chopsticks thus made the beautiful experience in taking the food. There are different varieties of chopsticks available; the Chinese chopsticks were blunt whereas Japanese variety is pointed at tips. Chopsticks for children were much shorter than regular chopsticks. These chopsticks were made from bamboo, Wood, ivory, silver, plastic or even with jade also, but most preferable materials were wood, ivory and bamboo. Some chopstick etiquette is never waiving your chopsticks over the food while you taking your food this seem to be poor manner.
  • Never spear your food or poke your food with chopstick it is bad manner, even that dish is difficult to pick using your chopstick but you should not spear your food, also you should not drag the bowl or anything using the chopstick. After finish your food you want to place your chopsticks means rest it on the chopstick rest or rest it at side of bowl or plate and you should not kept it in your rice bowl since it indicates ancestral offerings and it will create bad impression on you. You must not suck at tip of the chopstick, and have separate chopsticks for you.
  • Tips to use chopsticks, the two important aspects that to govern were that ends of the sticks to be even, one should not protrude over other and both sticks to of same plane. Next take the lower stick place it between the thumb finger and index finger and made rest it in the ring finger and hold it using thumb this stick remains fixed. The upper stick is placed between index finger and middle finger tip and with the thumb tip holds it firm. To take the food from the bowl, move the upper stick alone using index finger and middle fingers, and by the regular practice it is easy to take food.
