How to Install phpBB through Cpanel


phpBB is a forum software that is based on the PHP language. phpBB is an acronym for PHP Bulletin Board. It is licensed by GNU General Public License. It is free and available for the public to use. The forum was originally written by James Atkinson. When phpBB was moved to SourceForge.net, Nathan Codding and John Abela enter the development team.  phpBB 1.0.0 was debuted on the 9th December, 2000. phpBB3 is the latest version of phpBB.

phpBB has a user friendly control panel for the administrator, moderators and users. You can create unlimited subforums. It allows you to create custom defined BBCode. You can also create custom profile fields.

Administrators have the ability to control all the aspect of the forum. The default theme of the forum is the prosilver theme. The personal settings include features such as ICQ number, AOL Instant Messenger, MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messengers , Jabber Address, Location, occupation, interest and birthday. Users can also hae a signature appear below every post they make. The signature can be formatted using BBCode. Administrators can define the maximum characters allowed for the signatures. The avatar is the image that appears beside the username. Administrators can disable this or ask the member to upload from their computer, URL or through a hotlinked location.

If you want to install PhpBB through cPanel, follow the instructions below:

Procedure:

  • On the homepage of your cPanel, click on the Fantastico icon. This will take you to the home page of Fantastico.

  • Click on PhpBB in the Discussion Boards section on the left Navigation bar.

  • Click on New Installation.

  • Select the domain on which you want to install PhpBB from the Install on domain drop down menu.
  • If you want to install PhpBB in the root directory of the domain, leave the Install in directory text box empty. If you want to install PhpBB in a directory, enter the directory name. This directory should not be existed. It will be automatically created.

  • Enter a username in the Administrator-username text box. You need this to enter the PhpBB administration area.

  • Enter a password in the Password text box. You need this to enter the PhpBB administration area.

  • Enter the name of your website in Site name text box.

  • Enter a short description for your phpBB site in the Short description text box.

  • Enter an Email signature in the Email signature text box. The email signature will be attacked to all emails sent by the forum.

  • Enter your email address in the Admin e-mail text box.

  • Select a preferred language from the Preferred Language drop down menu. By default, it is set to the language that display on the cpanel interface.

  • When you are done, click the Install PhpBB button.

  • Click the Finish Installation button.

  • PhpBB is now successfully installed.

If you have followed the instructions above, you will be able to install phpBB on your  site through Fantastico in Cpanel.
