How to Improve Your Memory

This article will help you improve your memory with a step-by-step process. In a busy world with a hectic schedule and draining responsibilities, we sometimes forget things. Perhaps you suddenly forget you have a meeting or forget all the things you memorized the night before an exam.   • The two types of memory are short-term memory and long-term memory. Short-term memory is remembering things for a few minutes, while long-term memory will take you longer to remember but will keep things in your memory bank for a much longer period of time—perhaps even forever.

  • Humans are visual learners. People generally remember more about something they saw rather than something they heard or read. You can improve your memory by associating what you need to remember with a visual image. When trying to do this, you will have a better chance of remembering something.
  • Get enough sleep. Students who cram for an exam would rather stay up late studying and memorizing than getting good, restful sleep. But there are studies that show that when a person gets enough sleep, he or she tends to remember things better. This is because getting enough sleep will enhance your brain’s ability to recall things. Get enough sleep—usually a minimum of seven hours.
  • Play games. Brain games are powerful at improving your brain’s ability and memory. You can play games that trigger your brain to work. Crossword puzzles in particular are very helpful.
  • Motivate yourself. When you take interest in something, it easier for you to remember it. For example, if you are naturally interested in shopping, you can use this if you are having trouble with math problems by relating shopping costs and discounts with math. It is better when you like what you are learning because having an interest in it will eventually help you memorize details about that particular field or area. Did you ever notice that when you are fascinated by something, reading every detail you learn about seems to effortlessly etch in our brain? Take advantage of this natural way of learning and memorizing.
  • Employ eye exercises. You can move your eyes from one side for 30 seconds every morning. Doing this exercise can improve your brain’s ability to memorize by 10% and will help your brain to function in harmony.
  • Be organized. Arrange your things meticulously. When you designate spaces for your things, make sure you return them to their proper places when you’re done with them. Organize your telephone and address book. Keep a planner to keep track of the things you need to do, bills you have to pay, deadlines you have to meet, etc. Having an organized life will keep memory chaos at bay.
