How to Identify Electrolyte Imbalances

Electrolytes are the body’s chemical agents that help regulate the homeostasis and functions of the human body. They contain minerals such as sodium, magnesium, potassium, calcium and even sugar. These electrolyte ions particles are easily dissolved in water. This helps to promote both muscular and nervous system functions. An imbalance can happen when there is excessive fluid loss. This could be in the form of over exertion, vomiting, diarrhea, and even chemotherapy. Excessive sweating can also e a culprit. People who do not eat well balanced meals are prone to imbalances. Also, patients who suffer from eating disorders have electrolyte imbalances. These imbalances can weaken the body.

Step 1

A noticeable symptom when suffering from an electrolyte imbalance is fatigue. You may notice that doing normal activities may prove to be difficult. This symptom is very different from just being tired. This onset of fatigue due to electrolyte imbalance cause some people to not be able to leave their beds, go to school, work or even shower by themselves. Chemotherapy can be taxing and also produce this kind of extreme fatigue.

Step 2

Unusual muscle pain is a common symptom of electrolyte imbalance. The muscles may begin to spasm, grow weak or severely cramp causing discomfort to the patient. This is due to the deficiency of nutrients in the neurotransmitters that go to the brain. This pain is not ordinary to the patient and would be distinct in feeling and nature.

Step  3

The hearts is a vital organ and need the right balance of nutrients and fluids to function properly and remain healthy. If there is an electrolyte imbalance, this may cause irregular heart beats. Also, this can slow circulation to the extremities. The blue pressure is elevated or lowered and cause blood flow issues. If any cardiac problem occurs, salt tablets may cure it and/or offer immediate relief to the patient. However, one should go to the hospital to ensure no damage is done.

Step 4

Electrolyte imbalances can cause bone, tooth and hair deterioration. This is because electrolytes contain minerals like calcium and magnesium. These nutrients are vital to a very healthy body and maintaining bones, teeth and hair. If  the imbalance is left untreated it could lead to osteoporosis, periodontal disease and continual hair loss in patients.

Step 5

Extreme dizziness and confusion can be an indication of electrolyte imbalance. These symptoms are not usually separate. They  usually accompany other  symptoms. These symptoms combined with slurred speech, lost of equilibrium or any of the aforementioned symptoms may be signs of a serious imbalance. If any of these symptoms occur simultaneously, then the ambulance and paramedics should be contacted immediately. Dial 911.
