How to Get a Baby to Sleep

Having a baby is a joy. Most parents dedicate their time to taking care of their children, making sure they are healthy and tended to. Some first-time parents find getting their babies to sleep particularly challenging. It can be difficult for first-time parents, but with a little patience and showers of tender loving care you can have your little tots soundly sleeping at night.

  • Babies are new to the world, so they don’t have a concept that people must sleep at night. That said, babies are like sponges and can easily learn things once they are taught. The first step is to introduce the difference between night and day. During the day you can create a lively and fun environment wherein the baby is very active and at night promote silence and relaxation so the baby will know it is time to sleep.

  • During the day keep the baby from lying flat on their backs on the floor. Instead, introduce this lying position only at night when the baby needs to sleep. You can keep the baby semi-seated in reclining chairs and make noises during the day so the baby can tell the difference between night and day.
  • Make sure the baby’s room is dark and quiet at night, as this will promote better sleep for tired babies. Our new favorite resource for setting up nurseries is at  https://foryournursery.com/.This will also help them categorize the difference between night and day. Babies have to first learn the difference between night and day, and this process can take about two weeks. Once you establish the night and day habits, you can set nap times for the baby.
  • Make sure the baby is well fed during the day. If the baby does not get the right amount of calories he needs, he’s more likely to wake up and craving sustenance at night—so make it a point to feed your baby right.
  • Keep your baby within arm’s reach. If you put your baby in a crib, make it a point to put the crib near your bed. If the baby is near you and she wakes up, it will be easier for you to put her back to sleep. If you feel the baby is about to wake up or cry, you can more easily prevent it from happening if you’re near your baby.
  • For older babies you can give them warm baths before going to sleep. This will promote relaxation in their bodies. You can also feed them warm milk or baby food to induce sleep and relaxation.
