How to Cook Pinto Beans


As the seasons change to colder months, so does eating patterns. The foods that people enjoy in the warmer months may not be the same kinds of foods they prefer in the colder months. People tend to want hot, comforting foods when the Autumn and Winter sets in good. Pinto beans are a southern cuisine favorite and a popular comfort food. They are not difficult to make. You can buy dried Pinto Beans in the bag for about a dollar. You can decide to spice up your Pinto Beans or have them as they are. Here are is a recipe on how you can make a good pot of Pinto Beans for your friends and family. Read on for more information.

Items You Will Need:

  • Large Pot
  • Plastic Bowl

  • Pinto Beans (2 cups)
  • Garlic Powder
  • Garlic Cloves (2, chopped)
  • Water (4 cups)
  • Onion (1, small and chopped)
  • Smoked Turkey Necks
  • Jalapeno (2)  Optional
  • Salt
  • Colander

Step 1

Pour the newly purchased Pinto Beans from the bag into the plastic bowls. Sort through the beans and remove any beans that have pitted spots, marred or misshapen.

Step 2

Place your beans into the colander. Rinse them thoroughly with cold water.

Step 3

Now, the beans should be move to the big pot. Fill the pot with water above the level of the beans. You want to water be to about 2 inches higher than the top of the beans. Allow them to soak for 8 or more hours. You can do this beforehand and store and soak the beans overnight in the refrigerator. This also reduces the amount of time the beans will require to cook. You can also parboil the beans. Do this by bringing them to a rapid oil, then, simmer the beans for 2 hours.

Step 4

Discard the water from the rinse. The beans go back into the pot. Now put 4 cups of water into the pot with the beans.

Step 5

Allow the water to heat on medium high settings. Put in the smoked turkey necks for additional flavor. The chopped onions, garlic, and garlic powder and salt all go in at this point. Taste to see if you need to add more seasoning.

Step 6

After the beans have come to a complete boil, turn the stove top setting down to low. Put a top on the pot and allow the beans to cook through. Stir them every so often to make sure they do not stick and that the water does not cook out.

Step 7

Allow the pinto beans to cook for a duration of 2 ½ house. Check to make sure the beans are tender. Retaste for flavor. You may add a little dash of salt right before they are finished to enhance the taste.

Step 8

Put the beans in a bowl and top with cheese. Serve while hot.
