How to Get Rid of Ants

Step 1

Try and figure out why the ants are coming into your house. Usually they are coming in due to food source, water or housing needs. After identifying the reason, eliminate it.

Step 2

Make sure to clean up after meals. Wipe down counters and small spaces where traces of food may be missed. Remove all trash from the home. These two things can be main the main culprits that are attracting the ants inside.

Step 3

Carry your trash receptacles and recycling bins as far away from the house as possible.

Step 4

If food has to be left out of the refrigerator on counter tops or tables, tightly wrap the food items in plastic cling wrap.

Step 5

Be sure to refrigerate any perishable food item. In warmer months were food can expire quickly in the heat, this becomes vital to keeping ants and bugs out of the home.

Step 6

If there are any standing pools of water in the home remove them. Dry wet and damp areas well. Ants also get thirsty. Eliminate any reason for them to infest your home.

Step 7

If you notice cracks around faucets, tubs, cabinets or walls seal them. You can opt for a 100% silicon caulk to patch up these cracks. The silicon caulk is the least toxic of all options.

Step 8

To prevent ants from entering in cracks, crevices and entryways you can use a few easy to find natural products, Chili pepper, paprika, borax or dried peppermint are all ant deterring products.

Step 9

If you notice that you have White flies, Mealy bugs, or Aphids in your garden you should eliminate them. They all secret a sugary substance that ants feed on.

Step 10

Use Tanglefoot sprays or paint to place on plants and tress. This acts as a barrier and prevents the ants from climbing up the plant or tree to eat.

Step 11

Notice where the ants are accumulating in the house. You can remedy this by making your own bait. Use 1 TSP Boric Acid mixed with 2 ½ oz. Corn Syrup or Honey. Heat the mixture until the Boric Acid is completely dissolved. Add equal amounts of the bait with water. Place in a dropper and place the mixture in the places the ants are appearing most.

Step 12

You can also make a repellent. Combine orange peels with water in a blender. Pour the solution over the anthill near your house.

Step 13

If you don’t have any of the other ingredients, boiled water might do the trick. Pour 3 gallons of boiling hot water into the anthill near your house.
