How to Use Natural Colors to Change Your Mood

The colors that we associate with nature have a particularly powerful impact on our mood and can be used throughout our homes to stimulate our senses and bring restorative balance into our lives. There are a variety of tones within each color, all of which will promote a slightly different response – find the tone that works best for you.

Yellow

Think about the energy and warmth of the sun and you will understand the color yellow. It is uplifting and focuses your mind. It is cheerful, bright, fresh and stimulating, reminiscent of springtime and new beginnings.

Because of all these connotations, yellow is a great color to use in your kitchen or dining room, where inspiration and focus are a great way to help start and end the day. The cheerfulness of the color makes it great for any spaces where people congregate. Try it out in kids’ rooms to make their disposition sunnier!

Green

Think about the color green and what springs to mind is growth, fertility and freshness. It is a very balanced and reassuring color which can be used anywhere in your home that may require more peace and balance. Because it is associated with abundance and money, it is also considered a lucky color. It is a good choice for bedrooms or sitting rooms, where you don’t need too much stimulation but would like harmony.

Blue

Blue is associated with the sea and sky and represents calmness and tranquillity. Use it in areas where stress or tension has been a problem in the past. It is a very restful color and is a great choice for a bedroom or bathroom. If, however, you have a tendency to feel blue and have low energy levels, it can add to your woes. You might want to choose a tone that has a higher proportion of red, which will add more energy than a stark, cool blue.

Brown

Brown is the color of Mother Earth and symbolises stability and strength. If you are constantly up in the air and find it difficult to make decisions, a little touch of brown in a room can bring you back to earth. However, brown can sometimes be seen as depressing, as it also represents the ageing process, so it is probably wise to use it in relatively small doses. As it is a dark color it can also make a room look much smaller so make sure that you have enough light or space for this not to be a problem!

Grey

Grey is a color often used as a neutral backdrop in homes and offices. It is a combination of black, which is the absorption of all colors, and white, the absence of color, and so it is somewhat confused. It can be a soft and subtle color, but for some it can be depressing as it is reminiscent of stormy, cloudy skies. If you find that you are unsettled in a grey room, this may be the reason.
