How to Prevent Motion Sickness


Motion sickness is also called kinetosis or travel sickness. This condition is a result of the disfunction between motion as it is visually perceived and the vestibular system movement sensor. Depending on what causes the kinetosis it may also be named simulation sickness, seasickness, car sickness, air sickness or space sickness. There are simple ways you can prevent motion sickness. Here are a few tips how.

Step 1

Make sure you eat lightly before leaving for you trip. Try eating things that calm the stomach and absorb excessive saliva. Some items are: crackers, ginger ale, lemon or olives.

Step 2

When you are loading or planning for your trip ask to be situated near the front of the car, boat, or plane. You have the option of choosing seating arrangements on some aircrafts. Take advantage of this option and seat yourself in the most beneficial place for you. If you don’t have this option ask when you board whatever mode of transportation if it is possible for you to be seated as close to the front as possible to help with your motion sickness. Staff more often than not can comply with you request especially since it is medical related.

Step 3

When your mode of transportation is in motion, keep yourself facing the direction that you are moving in. This helps to keep your eye and body sensations synchronized. This step may delay or eliminate the onset of motion sickness altogether.

Step 4

While in motion, keep your eyes on the horizon. If this is not visible to you simply pick a spot in front of you as a focal point. Look at this spot to keep your oriented.

Step 5

Some foods are said to help calm the nausea associated with motion sickness. Considering eating a small piece of fresh ginger or sip on ginger ale. Ginger is said to have properties that can help soothe the stomach.

Step 6

If you can not stomach the bite of fresh ginger or carbonated drinks, then take a powdered form of ginger. Ginger is available in capsulated form. Take 2 500 mg capsules at least a half an hour before scheduled departure. You may take another dose after four hours if you are beginning to feel nauseated.

Step 7

Fresh air. If you are seated at a window, then keep the window open to allow air to circulate. If you are not then at least have a place where fresh air is available to you. Most air crafts have air vents positioned above the heads of passengers. Take advantage of this if nausea ensues.
