How to Develop a Bedroom Routine

Getting a good night’s sleep makes you feel and look better. Dark circles under the eyes are not an attractive sight. How much sleep you need depends on you. Your body will tell you if you get too much or too little. Too little will make it difficult to get through the next day and too much can make you sluggish in the morning. Some 60 per cent of the population sleep between six and eight hours a night. Think about how much sleep you require to feel at your best.

Many things can impact on whether we have a good night’s rest. Tension or stress is one of the leading causes of lack of sleep. The more you worry about it, the less likely you are to fall asleep. Don’t force yourself. If you can’t sleep, get out of bed and read a book.

  • If you are prone to restless nights there are things that you can do during the day to avoid problems. Take half an hour of exercise each day. A walk after dinner can help you to digest your meal so that your body is ready to sleep at bedtime. Avoid too much caffeine during the day: it may give you a buzz, but it can also set you on edge. Keep alcohol consumption within moderation as it can cause interrupted sleep.
  • As with everything, develop a bedtime routine and it will become a natural part of the day. Try to go to bed at about the same time every night. Your body will naturally get sleepy as you approach bedtime. Give your face a good scrub or get into a relaxing bath. Pamper yourself. Set aside a few minutes to think about your day. Ask yourself whether you achieved what you had hoped, and if not, how you would change tomorrow to learn from today.
  • Keep a journal. It doesn’t have to be long. Write down three things that you were thankful for during the day and anything special or inspiring. Somehow writing it down gives it importance.
  • Make sure that your bedroom is not stuffy. Open the windows and let some fresh air in. Do some deep breathing while sitting comfortably with your eyes closed. Let your thoughts go and relax.
  • Look around you. Make sure you have what you need at your fingertips. Think about whatever will relax you, make you smile and get you into the right mood for the sweetest of dreams.
