Tips to Avoid Getting Pregnant for Women

Nobody wants to be pregnant and unprepared, but it is relatively easy to prevent such a situation. It is even easier if women have enough knowledge and discipline to give proper attention to their sexual activity. It also takes responsible actions to avoid getting pregnant when you are not prepared to be a mother.

1. Abstain from direct genital-to-genital contact with men.

Complete avoidance of genital-to-genital intercourse with the opposite sex is the only foolproof way to prevent pregnancy.  Abstinence from sexual activities is, hands down, the best option to prevent you from being pregnant.

2. Familiarize yourself with your body.

Another way to avoid getting pregnant is to get to know the basic facts about your body. You must have awareness of how your body works; i.e., when you ovulate, when you last had your period, when will you have your next period, etc. If your menstrual period is regular, always stay abreast of your cycle and use that as the basis of knowing whether you are fertile or not.

3. Understand ovulation.

If you are sexually active, you must know when your body ovulates. Familiarize yourself with the signs of ovulation such as tender breasts, a discharge that’s clear and stringy, and abdominal pains. If you don’t experience any of these signs, see an OBGYN and don’t be shy about asking questions. If you’d rather not go to an OBGYN, check out from the library some books related to ovulation or search online for informative articles related to ovulation.

4. Use proven birth control methods.

Choose and stick with a birth control method.  Whether that be pills, shots, implants or condoms, just make sure you use one—always.

5. Never be too lenient.

You should never let your guard down just because you are on birth control.  If you’re not comfortable with a certain birth control method, look for another one until you find one with which you can stick.  There are a lot of options from which to choose when it comes to birth control methods.

Tips and Warnings:

If you’re seeing someone exclusively, you can both take the responsibility of preventing pregnancy.  For instance, perhaps it will be your task to purchase the diaphragm jelly while he reminds you to consistently take your pills.  By doing this together, you are increasing your success rate of avoiding unwanted pregnancy.

Remember that around three-quarters of conception happens approximately one day prior to your ovulation.  By knowing this piece of information, you will be aware of the time when you are most vulnerable of conceiving. Also keep note that sperm cells can survive for five days, so there are still chances you can get pregnant—though the chances are much lower.

Women with irregular menstrual cycles should be particularly cautious about utilizing birth control since they are less likely to know when they will be producing an egg cell.
