How to Use GIMP


Photographs can be priceless. Some older pictures may need correction and restoration. You don’t need to be a professional photographer to help restore family memories. All you need is the photo, a computer, GIMP and a little guidance. Here is how to use GIMP. Read on for more information.

Step 1

If you are using GIMP on your computer them you must scan the photo you will work with. Open the digital photo. Make any notes of the condition of the photo. Is it grainy, faded, and blotchy? Select the filter pack options right under the menu labeled colors.

Step 2

A filter pack will permit you to make numerous changes to the digital photo simply by selecting the part of the photo that needs to be altered from your desktop. You can apply any filter to the entire photo or just to a very specific place. The autonomy is yours. You can choose the way the filter will be applied to the digital picture as well. You have the option of choosing highlight, mid tones or shadows. Each selection has its own set changes that happen.mid tones, shadows or highlights. These will automatically populate on the screen.

Step 3

If you need to change the hue of a picture take into account the saturation, lightness and grayness. You can change the color scheme spacing to alter this aspect of the photo.

Step 4

After the hue is where you need it, you can start to work on the saturation aspect of the photo. After you lower the saturation select the option that allows you to render your image at this point. Click value to execute all changes.

Step 5

The value option allows you to lighten the appearance of the image or darken it according to your standards and tastes

Step 6

You can take advantage of the advanced options. These details allow you to adjust aspects like the midtone, highlight and shadows of the digital work image. They can be seen in real time as they are executed. This helps the editor keep track of the overall consistency of the photo. You can preview and resize the photo as you may need.

Step 7

Take notes of how you final image turns out. Sometimes, when you are seeking to restore a photograph, the resolution may not be able to be completely regained.  Things that damaged the photo like sunlight, extreme exposure to heat or other elements may have caused resolution to be lost. However, a HSV correction may greatly improve the appearance of even the most damaged photos. You don’t have to be a professional editor to restore photos to an increased level of visibility.
