How to Teach English to Absolute Beginners


Teaching English to complete beginners is a very difficult task. Many of English teachers think that their students already know most of the things. But actually this is not the case. How can a person learn a thing when he does not know even its basics? Beginners have to suffer a lot in these types of English tutorials.

You can make these students learn English in the following manner:

Procedure:

  • You should know their native areas. Many people are not native but they speak English because English is the main language used on TV and internet. So, such kind of students can speak out some phrases which are used commonly. If a person knows even a single phrase, build on it and you will be successful at last.

  • Every day you should think that if you are meeting the needs of the beginner.   You will have to learn the language of his home town. This will create a link between you and your student and you will be able to do things appreciably well with him. You must induce, in your student, trust for you. He will be able to learn fast by this.
  • House rules and a translator are very important if you are not able to learn the native language of your pupil. Your lessons will be easier for the student by this.
  • ESL workbooks lessons are very effective for teaching English to the beginners. You may have their copies from any book shop. They can form firm basis of your student.
  • You should use simple words and small sentences in the beginning. Sentences like,” Hi, I am Harry” are very effectively taken up by the beginners. The alternatives will create interest in your lessons. For instance, an appropriate alternative for the above mentioned sentence can be,” Hello! My name is Harry.” This procedure enhances the initial learning process.
  • You should repeat the rules and meanings again and again in your lectures. You should keep a slow and steady pace. You must be able to give your students proper concepts of the words with hand gestures and drawings. Visual aids can deliver the message of words in an adequate manner. Build your students’ vocabulary. Give them a letter or two in a day and ask them to make out words of the same. They will be able to learn sharp.
  • Correct pronunciation should be provided at the time of your lesson so the student may store the voice in his subconscious.
  • No one can stop a curious, hardworking and devoted student from learning a new language. You should try your best at this task. This requires patience, and the one, not losing endurance will surely succeed.
