How to Make Upside Down Hanging Tomato Plants

Have you even seen those tv commercials that feature the hanging tomato plants? Those twisted tomato plant hangers are a great tool to have if you want to grow tomatoes but you have very limited space to do so. Do you live in an area that limits your outdoor or indoor space but you still would like to grow your own fruits or hang your plants? People who live in more urban areas, people who live on balcony’s or other space constrained places can use this method. You can plant the tomato plants on used 5 gallon food safe plastic buckets to save on buying new pots. This method also works if you just want to liven up your space with live green plants and foliage. It’s the prefect way to add a little natural element to your home. The best part is you don’t have to spend extra money just to have a hanging tomato plant, strawberry plant or green foliage in your home. This method won’t cost you any more than milk money. You can use this method to grow hanging strawberries in the warmer months as well. Here is an easy and cost effective way to build your own homemade hanging tomato or strawberry planter.

Procedure:

Things You’ll Need:

  • Baby tomato plant
  • Empty gallon milk jug
  • Knife
  • Soil
  • Metal wire clothes hanger
  • Open flame

Step 1

Take your empty gallon sized milk jug and carefully cut the bottom off of it. Use caution when using knives and other sharp objects. Be careful not to cut yourself while slicing through the plastic. This is where the plant and soil will be placed.

Step 2

Follow the branches of your tomato plant and slide it through the nozzle opening of the jug. The plant should appear as if it has been growing inside of the milk jug and is coming through the spout.

Step 3

Take your wire coat hanger and straighten it out as much as possible. You want to bend the hanger until it is almost completely straightened. You may need to use your pliers to help.

Step 4

Place one end of the wire hanger over an open flame until it is visibly red hot. Gas stoves may work better for this. However, you may use any open flame that is available to you.

Step 5

Use the red hot wire hanger to pierce your milk jug. Puncture the jug approximately 2 inches from the bottom. Pierce through both sides. The wire hanger now enables you to suspend the entire jug.

Step 6

Reform the wire hanger. Form and secure the ends together to take the original shape. You can fill the jug with soil if needed and hang your tomato plant anywhere you choose.
