How to Make a Positive Impression with In-Laws

When you marry you automatically become part of your spouse’s family. Since parents want the best for their children no matter what their age, you might feel extreme pressure about having to prove yourself to your in-laws. But not to worry; in-laws can be second parents for you. Just stay true to yourself and treat your spouse the right way.

  • Treat your spouse well. His parents have cared for him since the day he was born, and all they want is the best for their kids. It’s not cliché; it’s true. Nothing will please parents more than knowing you treat their child well. If you visit their house, show them that you take care of their son or daughter.

  • Never fight with your spouse in front of your in-laws. Not only will this disappoint them, but they will be inclined to side with their child. If an argument arises while you both are with them, try to keep your cool and discuss the problem later when both of you are alone.
  • Reach out to them. Call them instead of waiting for them to call or check on you. Invite them over to your house for holidays and special occasions. This shows you respect them and want them to be part of your life. When a son or daughter marries, parents often feel they are out of the picture—so inviting them over is a simple yet big gesture that can win their love.
  • Seek their advice. It’s normal to have fights in a relationship, and the best advice you can get might be from your parents and in-laws. They know your partner better, so they would know how to address matters. Be careful not to tell too much, though, because you’ll still want the privacy of your relationship. Your in-laws will be more than willing to give you tips and advices, and spending time with them alone is a great way to grow close to your in-laws.
  • Treat them with love and respect. Treat them like you do your own parents. Do not be afraid to be comfortable with them since you are now part of their family. When they feel you genuinely love them, they will genuinely love you back.
